The 150-for-150 Goal

The Roman Milestones

150 Roman milestones reinstalled along the Via DobroGetica routes, for Dobrogea's 150 years within Romania. A project of material memory that changes how the place is seen.

What Is a Roman Milestone?

Miliarium (Lat.) — the stone that marked each mille passuum (a thousand double steps, about 1,480 m) on the roads of the Roman Empire.

Each milestone was a cylindrical stone column, 1.5–2 m tall, inscribed with: the distance to the provincial capital, the emperor's name, and sometimes road directions.

Roman Dobrogea (Moesia Inferior) was a province rich in roads and milestones. Via DobroGetica reinstalls these road markers, turning the routes into true Roman roads of the present.

The History of the Milestone in Dobrogea

I

1st – 6th century AD

Roman milestones mark the imperial roads of Scythia Minor, inscribed with the emperor's name and the distance to Tomis.

II

7th – 14th century

The Roman milestones are forgotten, buried by time and oblivion, as the Empire withdraws from Dobrogea.

III

2025 – 2028

Via DobroGetica reinstalls 150 milestones along the cultural routes of Dobrogea, recreating the ancient rhythm of the Roman journey.
